Flooring FAQs
What factors should I consider when choosing a carpet?
Several factors contribute to the overall durability and longevity of carpet. These include fiber type, density, twist, and stain treatment. Many carpets today feature enhanced stain resistance coupled with high durability to withstand the highest levels of foot traffic. Our flooring specialists can guide you through the many styles and constructions of carpet to find the right product to meet your needs and budget.
What are the differences between carpet fibers?
There are several types of carpet fiber used in manufacturing, each with it’s own benefits. Nylon is traditionally regarded as the best fiber for standing up to heavy foot traffic, and will offer some of the best stain treatments available. Polyester(P.E.T.) carpets feature recycled content, so they are both environmentally friendly and economical while offering great stain and fade resistance. P.T.T. carpets(such as DuPont Sorona) are inherently stain resistant, and offer excellent durability as well. Polypropylene or Olefin carpets can be good choices for use in light commercial applications, or for the budget conscious shopper.
What is the average cost of carpet?
Carpet can be the most economical flooring choice with prices from $.99 per square foot and up including installation. An average price range for carpet would be $2.00-$4.00 per square foot.
What is twist?
Twist refers to the number of times per inch that carpet fibers are turned. Generally speaking, the higher the twist the better the carpet.
What is Density?
Density refers to how close together the individual tufts of carpet are packed together. Higher density usually equates to better durability, but that is not always the case. Some carpet styles such as frieze have lower density but will utilize higher twist to maintain a high level of durability.
How often should I clean my carpet?
Manufacturers recommend that you have your carpet steam cleaned at least once every two years, preferably once a year. You may need to clean more often depending on the level of traffic in your home.
What can I do to regularly maintain my carpet?
Vacuum your carpet daily if possible, and at least once a week. Have your carpet steam cleaned once per year. Use walk-off mats at each entrance to your home, and remove your shoes if possible before walking on the carpet.
